I am fortunate to have two levels of 625 square feet each and the dust collector is in the lower level. This has several advantages. It allows gravity to work for rather than against the collector and it means that I don't have overhead pipes in the main shop area up stairs.
The collector is a 2 HP Oneida Dust Gorilla to which I have manifolded a network of 5 inch diameter piping. Each machine in the upper level is connected through a flex pipe in case I have to shift it slightly. Also each machine has a blast gate and I only open the gate for the machine that I am using at the time. In all cases except for the thicknesser I have reduced the piping to 4 inch just before the blast gate. In order to balance the air in the two levels I installed two 5 inch return air pipes between the two levels of the shop.
You will note on the photo of the band saw and router connection that I have made my own fitting adapters. I have always found it difficult to match one size piping to another and so make my own adapters. The ones shown in the photo were turned out of apple wood that I salvaged several years ago. |
