Planing Rough Timber Planks Using the Super Dust Deputy

"My retirement hobby is traditional wooden boat building. A key part of this involves planing rough timber into planks. After 3 years of using my Delta 50-760 1 - 1½ HP Dust Collector with an add-on cyclone garbage can and lid, I got tired of having to clean my filter bag after thickness planning only 3 - 5 boards. At the best of times, my system had moderate suction at the inlet of my 4" hose. In use, I could only pick up about 4" - 6" in the garbage can before the collector's plastic bag would start filling up. At this point I would have to stop and empty everything before the plastic bag filled up to 4" because my planer would start clogging up with chips.

In spite of this, the filter bag was clogged with dust and even fairly large chips. As a result, I have become fairly adept at cleaning my filter bag in order to keep my dust collector working well enough to keep up with my thickness planer.

I was getting tired of this routine and started investigating possible solutions. That was when I discovered your website and products. I purchased mine from Welbeck Sawmill. They are great people and helped me a lot."

I see you have your blower mounted on its side. How have the bearings held up?

This is a straight forward, innovative configuration. I also have Delta 50-760 dust collector and I’m interested in purchasing a Super Dust Deputy for it. I have just one question regarding Gord’s setup. How did he accomplish the connection of the output of the Dust Deputy to the input of the Delta Dust collector. It appears to be a 6” connection and it appears to carry the weight of the Dust Deputy when the bin is removed. So, what components are used to make the connection?

While we haven't been able to reach Gord for their direct comment, from the photos available we would surmise that they used a flexible plumbing coupler to connect the collector's 6" inlet to the cyclone's 6" outlet. These are available online at most hardware stores and are typically made from thick rubber with adjustable clamps on each end.
