Super Dust Deputy

Find answers to common questions regarding our Super Dust Deputy® cyclone separators for use with single stage dust collectors.
What type of dust bin works best?

You can use any shape or size container for your Dust Deputy cyclone. Keep in mind that the smaller the container, the more often you'll have to empty it.The dust container you provide must be able to be sealed airtight and must be strong enough to withstand the pressure created by your vacuum. For plastic buckets we recommend at least a 90 mil. wall thickness otherwise the container may collapse when in use.

Why do I need a cyclone separator?

Standard single-stage or bag-style dust collectors lose suction very quickly as the filter becomes clogged with fine dust. The cyclone uses centrifugal force to separate dust and debris from the incoming airstream, containing it safely away from the collector. This frees up the dust collector to move as much air as physically possible without hindrance. That means less downtime for filter cleaning, continuously high suction, and significantly prolonged filter life.

Which Super Dust Deputy cyclone do I need?

If your shop has fixed piping that matches the diameter of your dust collector's intake, choose a cyclone that matches that as well. So 6" ducting connected to a dust collector with a 6" inlet should use our 6" XL cyclone. The same applies for 4" ducting runs and our new 4" Deluxe cyclone. If your shop has piping that is smaller than your dust collector's inlet, such as 4" piping with a 6" inlet, then our 5" cyclone can be used to transition between them. You will need reducers to complete your setup. If you have industrial applications, such as collecting hot ash/soot or highly abrasive materials such as blasting powders, you should choose our Steel Super Dust Deputy.

What else do I need besides the cyclone?

In addition to the cyclone and your dust collector, you will need a reinforced, airtight container to mount it to, as well as flex hose or piping to connect it to your tools and dust collector. Any connections should be sealed using silicone caulk or HVAC foil tape.Shop for Assembly Tools

Can I buy the 4" cyclone separate from the kit?

No. The 4" Super Dust Deputy cyclone is molded with the drum lid as a single component and is not sold as a standalone product. If you need a 4" DIY cyclone, we would recommend using the regular 5" Super Dust Deputy and the 5" to 4" reducer (items #AXD002030A and DRL001205)

What else do I need to get started?

This Deluxe kit includes the essential components, but you will still need flex hose and/or piping to connect it to your tools and dust collector. Any connections should be sealed using silicone caulk or HVAC foil tape.Shop for Assembly Tools

Can I use this 4" cyclone with 6" piping?

No. For 6" ducting runs we highly recommend our Super Dust Deputy XL cyclone instead.

How do I connect the steel Super Dust Deputy to my tools?

The inlet of our Steel Super Dust Deputy cyclone measures 5" on the inner diameter to accept crimped steel ducting. It also includes a pre-crimped steel coupler fitting which can be used to readily accept flex hose or steel ducting on the inlet.

Can I use this 5" cyclone with 6" piping?

Yes, but this could add unnecessary air resistance to your layout and hinder your overall dust collection performance. For 6" ducting runs and industrial applications we recommend our XL cyclone instead.

Can I use this 5" steel cyclone with 6" piping?

Yes, but this could add unnecessary air resistance to your layout and hinder your overall dust collection performance. For 6" ducting runs and industrial applications we recommend our C-650 cyclone instead.

How do I connect the 5" molded Super Dust Deputy to my tools?

The intake of our Super Dust Deputy cyclone measures 5" on the outer diameter as many customers typically connect 5" flex hose directly to the cyclone and then reduce at the tool if necessary. Our Hose Quick Connect Kits are also very useful in this regard. If you already have 4" pipe or hose that you want to connect this cyclone to, then you will need our special 5-to-4 reducer (item #DRL001205) that slips over this cyclone's 5" inlet. Standard steel ductwork will not fit even if crimped.Other non-standard solutions may include chilling the inlet, to contract the molded resin, or using flexible drain pipe couplings readily available at local hardware stores. For more assistance please don't hesitate to contact us directly.

Can I use this 5" cyclone with 4" piping?

Maybe, but a smaller cyclone would likely perform better. For 4" ducting runs we highly recommend our new Super Dust Deputy 4" Deluxe instead.

Why should I choose the metal version of your Dust Deputy cyclone?

The Industrial Steel Dust Deputy is built for the toughest applications. If you're going to be sucking up large amounts of highly abrasive materials such as metals and gravel, the heavy-gauge cold-rolled steel cyclone will perform better and longer than our injection molded models. It's also ideal if you're expecting to suck up high-temperature materials such as hot coals and ash.

How do I connect the 4" Super Dust Deputy to my tools?

The ports of our Super Dust Deputy Deluxe cyclone measures 4" on the outer diameter as many customers typically connect 4" flex hose directly to the cyclone. Our Hose Quick Connect Kits are also very useful in this regard.

What dust collectors is the 5" Super Dust Deputy compatible with?

The 5" SDD cyclone can be used to retrofit nearly make or model dust collector with a 4"-6" diameter intake. This inlet size is typical of 1/2HP to 3HP single stage dust collectors by manufacturers such as Delta, Harbor Freight, Grizzly, Jet, Laguna, Powermatic, Rikon, Rockler, Shop Fox, etc.We recommend an operating airflow of at least 350 CFM for the 5" cyclone to effectively separate 99% of debris from the airstream.

Will the 5" or 6" Super Dust Deputy work better with a 3 HP dust collector?

That answer will depend on the size of the inlet on your 3HP dust collector. With any fan blower, airflow performance is limited by the cross-sectional area of your piping, so you will always want to minimize any reductions if possible. If your 3HP dust collector has a 6" inlet, then you'll want to use the 6" Super Dust Deputy XL cyclone. If the collector has a 5" inlet, then you should use the 5" Super Dust Deputy cyclone.

Do your steel cyclones have the same separation performance as your resin models?

Yes! Both our molded and steel Dust Deputy Cyclones use the same patented design to pre-separate dust and debris, protecting your vacuum filter from clogs and suction loss. The only difference between the cyclones is their durability. Steel cyclones are ideal for industrial applications with abrasive materials such as blasting sodas, glass beads, silica dust, etc.

What dust collectors is the 4" Super Dust Deputy compatible with?

The Super Dust Deputy Deluxe cyclone can be used to retrofit nearly make or model dust collector with a 4" diameter intake. This inlet size is typical of 1/2HP to 3HP single stage dust collectors by manufacturers such as Delta, Harbor Freight, Grizzly, Jet, Laguna, Powermatic, Rikon, Rockler, Shop Fox, etc.For larger sized systems check out our XL cyclone instead.

What dust bins should I use with this cyclone?

The shape and size of your container are completely up to you, so use whatever works best for your shop! A smaller container will need to be emptied more often, so most customers use at least a 17 gallon container with our Super Dust Deputy cyclones. Browse Dust Containers Any container you use must be: Airtight: Any air leaks can significantly reduce your suction and separation performance. We recommend foam gaskets or silicone caulk to provide an airtight seal. Reinforced: Light duty containers, such as typical plastic or aluminum trash bins, are not designed to withstand any suction pressure, and can collapse if used with a dust collector and cyclone.

How do I install the cyclone onto my container?

Our Super Dust Deputy cyclone includes basic hardware and a foam gasket for mounting to your container's lid. We also offer a complete 17 gal. drum kit that can be readily used with any Super Dust Deputy cyclone. If you are supplying your own container, we provide this free downloadable Lid Hole Template for our customers. If you are connecting your cyclone to the dust bin via flex hose, you may also need a 6" Angle Ring Flange.

Will this fit the Super Dust Deputy? I bought a 5" hose from another company, and it did not fit the Super Dust Deputy.

The inlet and outlet ports of the Super Dust Deputy cyclone are designed to work with ductwork components, so straight hose connections may be more involved. This hose will fit over the cyclone's 5" inlet, but it will be a tight fit. You may need to cool the cyclone's plastic material before sliding the hose over it (this will cause the resin to shrink temporarily).

We highly recommend the 5" Quick Connect Hose Kit for use with the standard Super Dust Deputy cyclone. This item is perfect if you expect to be continuously reconnecting hoses from multiple tools to the cyclone.

Does the Super Dust Deputy perform differently if it is mounted directly to a container vs. having a vertical hose/pipe between the bottom discharge port and the top of the container?

You will not see a difference in separation or airflow performance with either method. Users can choose either "mounting" method to position the cyclone in a way that works best for their shop.

The main factor you'll want to consider is how you'll be emptying the dust bin once it's full. Connecting the bin with hose allows the drum lid to be removed easier compared to lifting off the cyclone and lid together as a single component. The downside to the hose connection method is that you'll require additional components to purchase and will have more variables to consider when ensuring that the system is sealed airtight.

Can I use this with a shop vacuum?

No. Super Dust Deputy cyclones are designed for use in systems with high airflow volume (above 350 CFM) and low static pressure (below 10" WC). Shop vacuums are the exact opposite of this i.e. they are low airflow (below 250 CFM) but with high air pressure (above 60" WC). For standard vacuums we recommend our regular Dust Deputy kits.

Do I still need to use my filter?

Yes. All of our cyclone separators are designed to be used in conjunction with an air filter as they are only meant to remove the majority of dust and debris - not all of it. Eliminating the filter entirely would allow small, harmful dust back into your shop's air.The exception to this rule is if you have the means to vent your waste air outside of the shop. If you pursue that method be sure to consider the loss of conditioned/heated air, local safety codes, and whether your neighbors will be affected by dust laden air.

What is the footprint and height of the 6 inch XL?

The Super Dust Deputy XL cyclone measures 37.5" tall, 18" deep, and 19" wide. The flange on the bottom of the XL cyclone is 10" on the outer diameter.

Can I use this steel cyclone with smoldering or abrasive debris?

Yes, absolutely. This cyclone is built with heavy-gauge, powder coated steel for industrial applications collecting highly abrasive or smoldering materials e.g. hot ash/soot, blasting powders, concrete, grinding dust, etc. Please note that you should also ensure that your vacuum/dust collector is rated to accept these same types of materials i.e. do not collect hot/smoldering materials if your vacuum isn't normally capable of collecting this type of waste.

Can I use this Super Dust Deputy cyclone with food products?

While some customers have found use for our cyclones in food related applications (e.g. farming, coffee roasting, etc.) it is not rated as a food safe material by the FDA. This cyclone should only be used for food waste products and not anything that will re-purposed for later consumption.

What can I use to mobilize my dust collection setup?

If you're looking for any easy way to move your cyclone around the shop, without having to lift and carry it every time, we recommend pairing the cyclone with our Universal Drum Dolly and our Angle Brace Kit (to add extra stability).

Is the steel cyclone rust-proof?

In short, no. The steel cyclone has a powder-coat finish, ensuring that it's durable and rust resistant, but if you expect to have your cyclone exposed to water on a regular basis (e.g. exposed to harsh weather, submerged in water, etc.) we recommend you find additional covering to prevent corrosion over time.

Is it possible to buy just the waste bin?

The waste bin is not available as a standalone item, but if you are an existing owner of the Dust Deputy then we can readily offer you a replacement for any damaged components. Please contact our service department to order.
