"Woodworking is one of my interests, and I belong to the Lockport (NY) Woodworking Club. Several months ago I purchased a portable Oneida Air Mini Gorilla dust collector and am very happy with it. I use a quick disconnect to hook this unit to individual machines or short run manifolds on multiple small machines within my basement shop.
Recently, I acquired a used Powermatic Model 45 wood lathe and received instruction on turning at our club meetings. It is surprising the amount of dust that is generated using skews and gouges, let alone finish sanding on the lathe. My solution was to build what I think is a fairly unique set of dust collectors into an existing shelf unit attached to the lathe bed and basement wall.
I constructed two boxes (about 10" deep × 11" high × 18" long) to span the 36" usable length of the lathe bed. The boxes slide in and out independent of each other to accommodate various sizes of stock and to provide clearance for using long handled turning tools. Removable grills on each collector box feature larger (5/16") holes around their periphery, and smaller 3/16" holes in the center to achieve more uniform air flow over the intake area.
The collector boxes have 4" diameter flex hoses in back of the shelf unit leading to a Y fitting, and on to a single connection port for the Oneida Mini Gorilla. This system works very well in my shop. I could have used a another gate and hose for cleaning up turning waste; but a smaller shop vacuum is convenient also."
